Stores are filled with heart shaped boxes of chocolates, glittery cards, and roses by the dozen, so it must be time for Valentine’s Day.
Which means it is also time for Bucket Brigade’s ‘Til Death: A Marriage Musical.
‘Til Death is the story of two married couples. Ethan and Olivia have been together for years, but their marriage is on the rocks. On the other hand, Leslie and Freddie are newlyweds on their honeymoon and very much in the “honeymoon phase” of their relationship. Happily for some and unhappily for others, the four find themselves snowed in and stuck together at a cabin. Before the weather clears, each couple’s relationship has irrevocably changed…but change may not be the worst thing.
At a time of year when relationships and words of love spiral so easily into sappiness and commercialism, ‘Til Death is a breath of fresh air. It is touchingly beautiful without being cloying, simultaneously heartrending and hilarious. So many books and movies end with marriage as the happily ever after, but ‘Til Death dives into the nitty gritty of “ever after” to portray the reality of relationships in all their poignancy and ridiculousness.
A quick note about that ridiculousness—come to this show prepared to laugh. Whether you’re groaning along with Olivia as she purposefully puts on the sweater and lipstick she knows Ethan hates or you’re shaking your head at Leslie and Freddie’s invented elfin love language, there’s humor to connect with.
Bucket Brigade’s Artistic Directors, Jeremiah and Vanessa Gamble (who play Ethan and Olivia) have turned this show into a Valentine’s tradition. They’ve performed the show every year since 2012 (and at Art House since 2014). This year, they star opposite Damian and Anna Leverett (Leslie and Freddie), another real life couple.
‘Til Death’s strength is that it rings true to life. Add to that the stellar performers and well-written lyrics, and this show is sure to have you laughing as you reach to hold your loved ones a little tighter.
