It’s a new year. Time for new beginnings and resolutions. Better, healthier habits. Trying new things.
Etc. Etc. Blah. Blah.
But, by now, you’re surely sick of hearing that kind of crap, so don’t worry: This isn’t one of those type of posts.
This is a post to honor repeats and die hard habits (whether or not they’re healthy).
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for new things and adventures and mixing it up—all those January New Year type things. But I’m also a creature of habit. As most people are, at least to some degree. I mean, are going to tell me you don’t have a routine for how you get ready for bed at night or make your breakfast in the morning?
Didn’t think so.
Here we are, 11 days into the new year, and I know this year will have a lot of changes. I’ve got plans and goals. But, among those big plans, are also plans of a simpler sort. Because my most immediate goal, the one that’s been consuming half my waking thoughts and eating into hours I should reserve for sleep, is just to finish a book series.
Being enthralled by a book is nothing new for me, but it doesn’t happen all the time either. So I’ve been enjoying my habit of reading before bed (or through most of the evening) and, now that I just can’t get through this series fast enough, all through my lunch break, too. Books: an addiction I’ll never try to cure and never regret, no matter how tired I am after playing the “just one more chapter” game until the wee hours.
Music is another thing I like to repeat. I scoff at radio stations that over play the most popular songs until you hate them, but on my own I can listen to the same song for hours and never tire of it. Lately, I’ve been on a musical kick, and do I regret listening to The Greatest Showman soundtrack in a loop? Never. I don’t know all the words by heart yet, so I’d venture to say I haven’t listened enough yet.
Let’s not forget clothes. Who else likes to wear the same outfits over and over again? I sure do. Hey, if something looks good, it looks good. And you don’t mess with that. Right now my favorite outfit is a white turtleneck and denim jumper (or dress—for those British readers who are trying to fathom a denim sweater) combo, and I’m trying to wear it as often as possible. Whenever I’m getting ready, I try and remember the last time I wore it and if I’m seeing those same people. If not, on that turtleneck goes. Poor Kyle, he’s really the only one I exempt from the same outfit rule. But, he’s also seen me wear the same sweater for….never mind, I’m not going to tell you how long I’ve been wearing it around the apartment. Suffice to say it’s a lot…and it’s one of my less admirable repetitive habits.
Ah well, I didn’t resolve to be perfect in 2018.
Much as I love all the new beginnings and new promises that January brings, it’s also comforting to know that not everything has to change.
So, here we are. Eleven days into the new year. It’s going to be a great one, I can feel it, but while you’re conquering your resolutions and goals for 2018, and forging your new, healthier, loftier habits, take a moment to enjoy all the little things—the best things—that are staying the same.
